Original Work Time - #9

Last week in ISM was mainly focused around original work. I started with general background research regarding different types of music labels and their responsibilities, and how some popular recording labels came to be successful since their first start. I also got a pretty solid grasp on the different sectors of music business such as marketing, A&R, and artist management, which were helpful in determining the direction I want my business to go in. I also did some background research on writing business plans. Since I will be making a detailed business plan of a recording label, I realized that I will need to be knowledgeable in marketing/entrepreneurship areas as well. This was a huge learning experience for me because I have always been interested in marketing and building brand names for businesses, and combining it with the artistic areas of the music industry made it very exciting. Some questions that I had while researching were "what are some effective marketing strategies for artists?" and "how can business plans enhance the quality of the product that you have to offer to your audience?" which were both answered through the detailed article I found for my research assessment. I decided to focus my research assessment around business plans since I wanted to get a good understanding of the different information I should be including in my own plan. Through my research, I learned the importance of market analysis and audience research. These are some things that I can work on this week. They are necessary prior to building a good foundation of any business, and things that I should complete before starting to actually write my business plan.
