In ISM last week, I spent time talking to my mentor and researching for a potential artist that I could manage. Since we do not have any more assessments due on Fridays, I had more time to spend on my final product. I texted my mentor, Laura, asking about how I should be researching different artists to get started on my marketing plan. She suggested digging through Spotify first to find artists that I might like and told me I could also use the “suggested artists” feature to kind of spiral into artists that have similar sounds that I might not be familiar with. Then once I find some artists that I like, she told me about a website called chartmetric that lets people look at various analytics about that artist including their streaming numbers, social media, etc. In addition, she also suggested looking through Soundcloud for emerging artists as well. Another suggestion of Laura that I thought was very interesting was that it would be a good idea for me to dig deep into finding communities on Facebook and Reddit that talk about underground artists. Using this method, I could even find and join and bunch of discord servers and get familiar with new artists that way I would not be able to otherwise. Following her advice, I started to look into different underground artists using mainstream artists that I listen to as a foundation. I am planning on contacting Laura again this week to update her on my progress.
